Building information from BIM and geographic data from GIS often describe the same real-world objects but use different terms and definitions. This leads to misunderstandings in communication between disciplines. This presentation demonstrates how GIS systems can use the buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD) and other property servers to semantically and unambiguously classify geographic objects and assign them uniform attributes. The basis for this is the concept of a shared dictionary that provides technical terms for BIM and GIS applications. This allows data to be exchanged more consistently, comprehensibly, and effectively across disciplines. Using a prototype in QGIS, the presentation demonstrates that this integration is feasible in practice, even though existing GIS software and data formats still impose limitations. The goal is to show how the bSDD and similar feature servers can improve BIM-GIS integration and facilitate collaboration in planning, analysis, and operations.
