Insufficient information on underground conditions remains one of the main reasons for delays and cost overruns in construction projects. The use of digital models and analyses of soil conditions help to minimize risks in infrastructure projects. Large infrastructure projects are characterized by spatial, temporal and technical dependencies. The history and the entire life cycle are increasingly considered, relationships with the environment and integration into other systems are mapped more comprehensively in models and digital twins. To capture infrastructure in its complete context, the Z-coordinate is of crucial importance. Practical examples illustrate the relevance of comprehensive information about the conditions in the underground even beyond the construction phase. In concrete projects, the benefits of digital twins, the use of artificial intelligence or the added value of methods such as BIM / FME will be presented. This is the only way to achieve greater security in the planning, financing, approval, construction and operation of buildings, plants and networks.
