Digital Twins in Virtual Reality - Perspectives for Investigation and Court Proceedings
Laser scanning, photogrammetry, and drone-based surveying enable the comprehensive and highly accurate acquisition of complex crime scenes and incident environments. However, the increasing volume and level of detail of these datasets create new challenges for their analysis and on communicating complex spatial information in an intuitive and accessible way.
At the State Office of Criminal Investigation Baden-Württemberg (LKA Baden-Württemberg), 3D survey data are visualized immersively in a CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment). Instead of examining complex 3D models on a desktop monitor, users can collaboratively walk through crime scenes, change viewpoints, and intuitively perceive spatial relationships.
The presentation discusses the requirements that Virtual Reality systems must meet for forensic applications and demonstrates the added value they provide for spatial analysis, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the communication of complex forensic findings. The focus is not on the technology itself, but on how precise survey data can be transformed into a shared spatial understanding of complex environments.
