This session explores how continuous optical deformation monitoring can complement traditional surveying and instrumentation on live infrastructure projects, using a UK tunnel monitoring case study as a practical example. The project involved monitoring tunnel deformation during nearby construction activities, including excavation and piling, where access constraints and maintenance requirements made conventional approaches challenging. A compact optical monitoring system was installed alongside an automated total station to observe the same survey targets, allowing direct comparison of performance, accuracy, and operational impact. Attendees will learn how continuous, remote monitoring can reduce site visits, provide earlier insight into structural behaviour, and support risk management without replacing established surveying methods. The session will focus on lessons learned from real deployment, including installation constraints, data interpretation, and how continuous data changes engineering decision-making.
