Applications of Virtual Reality in Engineering Geodesy
Engineering geodesy is becoming increasingly important in the field of digital twins, as it often forms the link between reality and information systems. However, this also places new demands on workflows and interaction concepts. In an increasingly complex digital working environment, 2D screens are often already reaching the limits of what can be displayed – and engineering geodesy is no exception.
Immersive technologies such as AR or VR, however, offer ways to continue integrating people effectively into workflows. It is still difficult to assess exactly how the integration of immersive technologies in geodetic workflows will look like, because this depends largely on the further development of digital twins themselves.
This presentation outlines the current state of the art in VR and highlights some areas of application for VR in engineering surveying, in order to provide an outlook on where these developments might lead. It will explore immersive visualisations, demonstrate the benefits of immersive 3D survey planning (total stations and GNSS), and explain ways of interacting with information systems.
